about
To commemorate 60 years since the death of Alan Turing.
The 'Universal Machine' was Turing's concept that one day there would be a single machine that could hold enough memory to perform many functions and could turn its processing power to any purpose; one algorithm that could itself understand and perform any instruction.
Turing is famous for his seminal work in the field of artificial intelligence and he is held to be the father of the modern computer.
The track comprises an earlier piece of music originally titled 'Signals' and a poem written in memory of Turing called 'True Mathematics'.
The track is an elegy of sorts – recited by a computer – and describes Turing as a human incarnation of the spirit of mathematics.
This track celebrates his visionary work, before his untimely death in 1954.
lyrics
'To my Father.'
'In an abstract data field–
'Where fate and chance lie side by side
'And probabilities shimmer unending–
'Where gods and physics coincide;
'Hyperboloids tumble through
'An ether—of little we understand—
'Where algorithms twist into DNA
'And are bound up in the flesh of a man.'
'With a brain filled with these,
'He poured his thought into abstractions,
'The hardware primed—a ready mind;
'Interactions; fractions; subtractions
'That brought about, not by chance—
'A conception hitherto beyond any dream—
'This linguist fluent in algorithms
'Conceived of a universal machine.'
'But, as armies marched on Earth,
'Their fate hidden in cypher-code,
'The spirit of true mathematics
'Calculated the antidote.'
'Was the world ready for this genius?
'The man; the machine; the enigma?
'Whose problem was our axiom—
'A glitch; an error; a stigma.'
'A mistake in his rational function
'Led to the undoing of this incarnation,
'And unto the pseudo-Euclidean space
'He made his reunification.'
